
Mai’s self-titled debut came out in October, and it builds on the promise of “Boo’d Up,” letting her resolute vocals and heart-on-sleeve lyrics take center stage. Mai has been making music as a solo artist since 2016, when she released the first in a trilogy of EPs that set the table for her eventual pop stardom a little over two years ago, she noted on Saturday to knowing cheers, she’d played Royale as an opening act, supporting the shape-shifting singer Kehlani. On Saturday at Royale, the sweetly vivacious Brit showed that “Boo’d Up,” which won this year’s best R&B song Grammy and was nominated for song of the year, was no fluke - although judging by the crowd’s fervent singing all night, a lot of people in the audience knew that already.


The London-born singer’s breakthrough single, the fizzy “Boo’d Up,” had a slow burn - Mai originally released the track, produced by the in-demand DJ Mustard, on a 2017 EP - but it eventually became one of 2018’s defining singles, its plush grooves and pillowy synths providing a soft landing for Mai’s fluttering alto and the song’s incessantly catchy, heartbeat-mimicking chorus.
